We all know that it is respectful to learn a few basic sentences when we travel to a country but we also know that Portuguese is one of the hardest languages to learn, so we have listed a few things that we think are important for you to know and that will come in handy on your holidays.
However we’ll start with some that you might not use, but are very interesting!
Interesting expressions:
Tira o cavalinho da chuva– Literally: get your little horse out of the rain, meaning: no chance.
Rés-vés Campo de Ourique! – During the 1755 earthquake in Lisbon, people fled the seaquake waters created by the earthquake by running to higher land and hills, one of them Campo de Ourique, and managed to stay safe by a small distance. Nowadays it means: by an inch.
Muitos anos a virar frangos– Literally: many years turning chickens. Meaning: when you want to express that you are very good at something because you have done it for years.
Pensar na morte da bezerra- Literally: thinking of the death of the heifer, Meaning: used when you get distracted, have something on your mind or have a blank stare.
Está marafada– she is annoyed (Algarvian)
Torcer o nariz– When someone disagrees (and physically twists their nose)
Está a chover a potes– It’s raining cats and dogs
No tempo da minha avó– Literally: during my grandmother’s time, meaning: a long time ago, something used to be in a certain manner.
Nunca mais é Sábado– When something seems to never arrive, used when you are waiting for something anxiously.
Words you cannot translate:
Saudade- feeling of longing, to miss someone.
Fado– a typical Portuguese music, World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. Made famous by Amália Rodrigues.
Medronho– an Algarvian liquor made of arbutus fruit.
Calorento/ Encalmado– Someone who feels the heat more than others.
