Zoo de Lagos

A zoo for everyone

Lagos Zoo is an attraction located in the west of the Algarve and is an ideal place to go for the day if you are looking for attractions in the Algarve, especially if you have a young family.

Lagos Zoo is really more of a conservation park than a zoo in the traditional terms and while you won’t find any lions and tigers you will find a very good selection of exotic birds and primates around the attraction and a sweet petting zoo where you can interact with the animals.

The ethos of Lagos zoo is to protect, conserve and to educate visitors and there is plenty to learn as you walk about the zoo, without it ever being overwhelming or feeling as if you are on a school trip and need to make notes.

The layout of Lagos Zoo is particularly great for anyone with a pushchair or mobility difficulties because the entire zoo is on flat ground, making it easy to get about and ideal for toddlers, who will love being able to get up close and personal with the animals, particularly at the petting zoo where they can be fed and touched by visitors.

If you are worried about the conditions for the animals, then you will be pleasantly surprised at Lagos Zoo with enclosures being of a good size and all immaculately clean and well maintained. This care and attention extends across the park and there is a great atmosphere with the animals and birds firmly being put first by the attentive staff.

Perhaps the main attraction of Lagos Zoo is the monkey island, an area with lots of primates running free and this area is certainly a draw for older children keen to see exotic animals, while the younger children quite frankly seem to be happy enough pointing at the ducks and other small animals that wander about!

It can sometimes be difficult to find an attraction that really is suitable for young children and toddlers but Lagos Zoo ticks all the boxes and is somewhere that you can visit at any time of the year and see something new and different in a safe and well maintained environment. And because the youngest members of the family are entertained everyone else can relax in the picnic areas or with something to eat at the reasonably priced restaurant located on site.

Anyone visiting in the winter months will find that they basically have the place to themselves, however during the summer the zoo is large enough for lots of people to be there without tripping over each other. Also around Christmas time the zoo transforms into “Natalandia” with special festive themed attractions and a chance to see Father Christmas – perfect for those that still believe and even those that don’t!

Lagos Zoo may not be the biggest zoo around but it has everything you need for a fun day out in the Algarve with the family and is a great alternative to a day on the beach or around the pool with plenty to see, learn and do.
